  10.        This release note describes patch SG0000158 to IRIX 5.3.  It

  25.        This patch to IRIX 5.3 supports all hardware platforms.

  29.        This patch contains fixes for the following problems which
  30.        exist in IRIX 5.3 (bug numbers from SGI bug tracking system
  31.        are included for reference):

  33.           +o Changes were put into the kernel which allow the kernel
  34.             stack to be increased by an additional page for real-
  35.             time processes and otherwise on an as-needed basis.
  36.             This increases the reliability of the system by
  37.             eliminating scenarios in which the kernel stack might
  38.             overflow and panic the system (bug #240710).
  39.  
  40.             This patch is not needed unless a particular kernel
  41.             stack overflow problem has been encountered.  Running a
  42.             layered file system over NFS is one scenerio in which
  43.             this problem has been seen.

  47.           +o dbx and odbx when invoked with the -k option will give
  48.             incorrect information whenever the kernel stack
  49.             extension page is involved e.g. the backtrace of a
  50.             process using the stack extension will be incorrect.

  78.        This patch is only installable on systems running IRIX 5.3.
  79.        This patch requires installation in miniroot mode.  To
  80.        perform the installation, take the system down and follow
  81.        the normal procedures for starting up the installation tool
  82.        from the supplied release media.  It is recommended that you
  83.        select all the patch subsystems that correspond to software
  84.        already installed on the system.

  86.        One way in which software patches differ from full releases
  87.        and maintenance releases is that patches are reversible:
  88.        you can remove the patch and restore the installed software
  89.        to its state before the patch was applied.  This is done by
  90.        using the _v_e_r_s_i_o_n_s command as superuser:
